Srinagar, Sep 10 (KNO): Following the consecutive closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the government Wednesday reviewed the supply position and transportation mechanism of essential commodities across Jammu and Kashmir.
On Tuesday, the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reported that there was a possibility of shortages and a steep rise in prices of essentials across the Valley due to the closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
According to information available, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, convened a high-level meeting to review the supply position and transportation mechanism of essential commodities across Jammu and Kashmir.
As per details, officials during the meeting informed the minister that 400 trucks are being deployed daily, carrying nearly 36,150 quintals of food grains, LPG and other essentials across the two divisions.
In Kashmir alone, 210 trucks transport 20,000 quintals of commodities every day, while 190 trucks carry 16,150 quintals in Jammu.
Minister Sharma as per the officials also said that ensuring the uninterrupted supply of food grains, LPG and other essentials remains the top priority of the government, particularly in view of prevailing weather conditions and the highway closure.
He directed officers to maintain close coordination between the FCS&CA, Transport Department and JKSRTC for smooth logistics and last-mile delivery. “Buffer stocks in far-flung and vulnerable areas have also been mandated to prevent hardships to people.”
The minister also appreciated the transport authorities and drivers saying that they work round-the-clock to keep the supply chain functional. He reiterated the government’s commitment of ensuring food security and uninterrupted delivery of essentials to every household in J&K—(KNO)
